The Price of Beans
Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 09:22AM The price of beans in Honduras has risen continuously for several months now and the impact is being seen through out our project area. Last year, we could purchase 100 pounds of red beans for about $50. Today, that same 100 pounds is $100!
People are beginning to substitute chicken (which actually is an excellent substitution) for the beans because it is so much cheaper. When we have a short term missions team that wants to bag and distribute food to 350 to 400 houses in one of the colonias, we substitute spaghetti, tomato sauce, margarine, and sugar for the beans we used to provide for them. When we realized we could not purchase beans in the same quantities as we had in the past, we asked the residents of the colonias we serve what they would like instead of beans....two bags of rice or two bags of corn. They said "spaghetti, tomato sauce, margarine and sugar". So that is what we provide for them each time a mission team comes and provides the money to purchase the 6,000 pounds of food it takes to bless 350-400 houses.
It does not look as if the bean situation will change any time soon. The problem is being seen all over the world so all we knew to do was to pray and ask God to show us what to do. And as usual, He did!
We purchase an additional 100 pounds of rice and corn each week to pass out at the gate to people who come asking for food. Evidently, the word has spread outside our project area because we have people walking several miles looking for "Don Ron and Dona Shelley because we heard they would give us food". Please pray that our bins will always be full when we open them to serve these people. To God Be The Glory!
